This particular lesson plan uses a SMARTboard to teach Special Education students a lesson on spelling. It will include a game provided specifically for the SMARTboard from PBS Kids, including the Super Readers! By using the SMARTboard, I will connect to the PBS website and pull a lesson on spelling.
In this particular lesson, students will spell words to create a super hero, just like each character on the SUPER WHY television series. They will first be allowed to choose their own character. From there, they must spell the suggested word with the given six letters. The computer 'teacher' even pronounces the correct way for each letter sound to help them choose the correct letter, while putting together the suggested word. For example, when spelling 'mat' is says, "Click on the letter that makes the sound 'mmm' and next, "Click on the letter that makes the sound 'aaa.' Along with sounding out each letter, it gives another word that begins with each needed letter. If the student spells the word correctly, they will be given the opportunity to choose a super item, which literally dresses your character to create your own super hero!!
(Share lesson goals and objectives with students.) We will first begin the lesson with a review of the week's spelling words. As a whole class lecture, I will go over each word, allowing one of the children to volunteer if they think they know how to spell it and presenting the word again, in a sentence, to help children understand what it means as well.
Throughout the lesson, the student will begin spelling a three letter word, such as mat and continue until they have spelled a six letter word, such as hiccup. After spelling all four words suggested, they will have created their very own super hero, in which they can name after themselves or make-up a name if they choose! Their super hero then can be printed from the computer or even emailed to someone else to see what a wonderful job they have done!!
As you can see, using the SMARTboard and SUPER WHY is a excellent strategy to get children more engaged in phonics, reading and spelling! Unlike traditional spelling lesson plans, it allows each child to work hands-on and keep their attention/interest on something they really enjoy, which is exactly what Special Education students need!
Unfortunatey, its almost impossible to provide an illlustrated example; however, please check-out the website link below-It will direct you to the exact game on the PBS Kids website! http://pbskids.org/superwhy/#game/superhero
Below I have copied the link sent to my email upon creating a super hero with my son, Kaden John. Feel free to check this out as well!!
